PAN AFRICAN MOVEMENT SUMMIT

Africans from across the United States are urged to join leading Pan African scholars, activists, students and officials at the Pan African Movement Summit on March 3-5, 2006 in Atlanta, GA. under the theme Political Determinism for Economic and Cultural Rebirth to build a political structure for the restoration and reconstruction of African communities worldwide, for peace with justice in the world. In calling for the Pan African Movement Summit, Dr. Leonard Kwaku Jeffries stated “Katrina, Darfur, Congo and Haiti have mandated us to act now for the next generation because we are the ones who have experienced Kwame Nkrumah, Malcolm X Omowale Shabazz, Patrice Lumumba, Cheik Anta Diop and Dr. Clarke.”

The Summit is a continuation of the Pan African Movement formally launched nearly 106 years ago by key 19th century leaders such as Attorney Sylvester Williams, Bishop McNeil Turner, WEB Dubois and Booker T. Washington to promote a Pan African vision for the total liberation, unification and restoration of African people, in Africa and the African Diaspora. Today, this historical struggle has culminated in the founding and building of the Organization of African Unity (OAU), now African Union, on May 25, 1963 by the 20th century leaders like WEB Dubois, Marcus Garvey, Dr. Kwame Nkrumah, Jomo Kenyatta, Amy Garvey, Haile Selassie, Sekou Toure, Julius Nyrere, Namdi Azikwe, Ben Bella and Patrice Lumumba.

In a recent African Union meeting the AU Commission called for Civil societies to promote Pan Africanism and African values and that the ”African Renaissance is the program envisaged with Recognition for values of African heritage, and, connections with the African population in the Diaspora.” Also that “Africans and African descent peoples are urged to fully participate in AU vision.” The African Union today based in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia, continues to extend itself to the African Diaspora to participate as partners in the future of the African continent, the Homeland of those of African descent.

The call for a Pan Afrikan Union Summit was initiated at the May 25, 2005 African Liberation Day Town Hall Meeting in Atlanta when Minister P.D. Menelik, former organizer for Kwame Ture and Reverend Dr. Wyatt Tee Walker, called for a Pan African Master Plan in line with the African Union (AU/OAU) agenda and vision to fully integrate the African Diaspora (semi) nations into a unified political, cultural and economic global system of power. He proposed immediate actions for billions of dollars to be raised by Africans for Africans in a common Pan African fund for Reconstruction and additional billions raised as Restitution from former colonial and slaveholding states for the re-educating and re-building of African communities after centuries of devastation, enslavement, exploitation and genocidal warfare. The African Master Plan must demand immediate total debt cancellation, increased allocation of funding for health, education, food security, African trade & investments and a security system for peace and conflict resolution.

In the call for the Summit, Prof. James Small, former president of the Organization of Afro-American Unity (OAAU) established by Malcolm Omowale Shabazz, declared that we need “a Pan African cadre in every single nation, state and island… to put together an organization that can communicate with every African people on a minute's notice” and a Pan African Union structure for leadership to promote African nationalism in the U.S., in nations of the African Union such as Zimbabwe. Dr. Molefi Asante, an advisor to the African Union also called us to act when he highlighted the devastation of African people in the Gulf Port region of the U.S., stating "We need a revolutionary attitude among Black people in this country… We have got to be ready to help our own people. We have to be our own protagonist in our own history. We just can't wait for white people to do things..."

The Pan African Movement Summit leaders have heeded the warning of the late Dr. John Henrik Clarke that we must work for “Pan Africanism or Perish” and so are taking deliberate and decisive steps to build Pan Africanism in the U.S. for an African World Community. The facilitators of the Summit have also taken to heart the proclamation of Kwame Nkrumah who asserted that “Pan Africa not Euroafrica should be our watchword… and Black power in America or in any other part of the world, can only find consummation in the unification of Africa” the home of the black people and that “Only a united Africa can redeem its past glory and renew and reinforce its strength for the realization of its destiny… in a new era of prosperity and power.”

Some of the speakers and workshop leaders are Dr. Yosef Ben Jochannan, Mama Sybil Clarke, High Priest Wande Abimbola, His Excellency M. Marparango of Zimbabwe, Congresswoman Cynthia McKinney, Dr. Asa Hilliard, Dr. Leonard Jeffries, Dr. Molefi Asante, Elombe Braith, Viola Plummer, Prof. James Small, Queen Afua, Baba Hannibal Afrik, Priest Prince Rahm, Camille Yarbrough, Dr. Shelby Lewis, Dr. Charles Finch, Min. Akbar Muhammad, Hassima Maiga, Rev. Mark Lomax, Del Jones, Rev. Herbert Daughtry, Dr. Shelby Lewis and Cardinal Mbuyi Chui.

The 2006 Summit will also help charter an agenda for follow-up summits to prioritize African heritage, value system and philosophy as central to the restoration of the ‘African personality’ in the world and to promote Pan African power through trade, investments, business and development initiatives with Africans in Africa and the African Diaspora. The Pan African Movement Summit/Dr. John Henrik Clarke Conference will be held at the historic Atlanta University Consortium (AUC) in Atlanta, GA.
